The Computer Associates BrightStor ARCserve Backup Message Engine contains a buffer overflow vulnerability. If successfully exploited, this vulnerability may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code.
BrightStor ARCserve Backup is a backup and data retention tool that integrates with other BrightStor Data Availability and BrightStor Storage Management solutions. The Message Engine service is installed and started automatically on BrightStor ARCserve Backup servers.
According to a report from Zero Day Initiative, the BrightStor ARCserve Backup Message Engine contains a vulnerability that is caused by incorrect handling of RPC requests. This vulnerability may be exploited by sending a malformed RPC request to port 6503/tcp
or 6504/tcp
on a vulnerable system.
Note that the vulnerable software may be running on any machines that have BrightStor ARCserve Backup products installed.
A remote, unauthenticated attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code.
Upgrade
Computer Associates has released updates to address this vulnerability.
Restrict Access
Restricting access to port 6503/tcp
and 6504/tcp
at the network perimeter may help mitigate this vulnerability.
