Overview

The Dentsply Sirona (previously known as Shick Technologies) CDR DICOM is software for managing medical dental records. CDR DICOM contains several hard-coded credentials allowing administrative or root access.

Description

CWE-798: Use of Hard-coded Credentials - CVE-2016-6530

Dentsply Sirona CDR DICOM version 5 and below contains several hard-coded database credentials allowing administrative or root access.


Impact

A remote unauthenticated attacker may be able to gain administrative access to the CDR DICOM database.


Solution

Update the credentials

Dentsply Sirona has provided the following statement, which offers guidance for users wishing to mitigate this issue by changing their database credentials. Affected users may contact Dentsply Sirona Customer Service for more information.

CDR Dicom uses default passwords to optimize its installation and to expedite the setup and configuration of the software. A potential risk exists where unauthorized individuals with knowledge of the default passwords, and internal access to CDR’s SQL database, could retrieve the patient information stored by CDR exams.

_Mitigation of this issue can be achieved in several ways. Ensuring network access to patient information is protected from improper use is one approach. Another would be to replace the default passwords with user-selected ones. This can be accomplished during a custom installation of SQL Server or by modifying the default credentials after installation. _
