There is a vulnerability in the creation of Internet shortcuts in Windows Media Player version 6.4 and 7. This vulnerability may allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands when a victim views a malicious web page.
Windows Media Player versions 6.4 and 7 create Internet shortcuts in a known location in the user’s temporary files folder. Because local files are presumed to be trusted, applications should not allow remote attackers to create files in known locations.
When a victim views a malicious web page, an attacker could create a local file with a predictable name in the user’s temporary files folder. If the attacker chooses to embed script commands in this file, these commands will be executed in the “My Computer” zone when the file is opened in Internet Explorer. This will allow the remote intruder to execute arbitrary commands as the user viewing the web page.
