Abstract

IBM SONAS includes a flaw in the handling of special files created by an NFS client resulting in a vulnerability reported against IBM SONAS.

Content

VULNERABILITY DETAILS:

CVE ID:CVE-2013-0500

DESCRIPTION:
A flaw in the IBM SONAS code for handling special files (in particular character and block devices) results in a serious vulnerability when an NFS client stores such files on IBM SONAS and the same files are accessed via other NAS protocols such as CIFS, HTTPS, SCP and SFTP.

This vulnerability issue may enable an authenticated NAS user to exploit the following security exposures:
1. Crash of GPFS after execution of certain GPFS system calls on such a special file,
2. Read, write and manipulate IBM SONAS configuration and program code,
3. Read, write and manipulate user data.
**
CVSS:**
CVSS Base Score: 4.3
CVSS Temporal Score: See http://xforce.iss.net/xforce/xfdb/84839 for the current score
CVSS Environmental Score*: Undefined
CVSS Vector: (AV:N/AC:H/Au:M/C:P/I:P/A:P)
**
AFFECTED PLATFORMS: **

  • Affected releases: IBM SONAS 1.1.1.X through 1.4.1.0
  • Releases/systems/configurations NOT affected: IBM SONAS 1.4.2.0 and above.

REMEDIATION:

_
Vendor Fix(es):_

The issue was fixed beginning with version IBM SONAS 1.4.2.0 IBM SONAS customers running an earlier IBM SONAS version (e.g. IBM SONAS 1.3.2.X or IBM SONAS 1.4.1.0) must upgrade to IBM SONAS 1.4.2.0 or a later version.

_
Workaround(s):**None. **
Mitigation(s):_

NAS exports which are exported for NFS and at least one additional NAS protocol such as CIFS, HTTPS, SCP or SFP should be configured with the NFS option ‘no_root_squash’ to disallow the creation of such special files by an NFS client.
