This updated advisory is a follow-up to the original advisory titled ICSA-22-132-16 Siemens Teamcenter (Update A) that was published June 16, 2022, on the ICS webpage on cisa.gov/ics.
Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities may lead the binary to crash or allow an attacker to view files on the application server filesystem.
Siemens reports these vulnerabilities affect the following Teamcenter product lifecycle management software:
--------- Begin Update B Part 1 of 2 ---------
--------- End Update B Part 2 of 2 -----------
The tcserver.exe binary in affected applications is vulnerable to a stack overflow condition during the parsing of user input that may lead the binary to crash.
CVE-2022-24290 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 7.8 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
The application contains an XML external entity injection (XXE) vulnerability. This could allow an attacker to view files on the application server filesystem.
CVE-2022-29801 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 5.3 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N).
Han Lee from Apple Information Security reported these vulnerabilities to Siemens.
Siemens has released updates for several affected products and recommends updating to the latest versions. Siemens is preparing further updates and recommends specific countermeasures for products where updates are not, or not yet, available:
--------- Begin Update B Part 2 of 2 ---------
--------- End Update B Part 2 of 2 ---------
To reduce the risk, Siemens recommends users harden the applicationβs host to prevent local access by untrusted personnel.
As a general security measure, Siemens recommends protecting network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. To operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends configuring the environment according to Siemensβ operational guidelines for industrial security and to follow the recommendations in the product manuals.
Additional information on industrial security by Siemens can be found on the Siemens industrial security webpage.
For additional information, please refer to Siemens Security Advisory SSA-789162
CISA recommends users take defensive measures to minimize the risk of exploitation of this vulnerability. Specifically, users should:
CISA reminds organizations to perform proper impact analysis and risk assessment prior to deploying defensive measures.
CISA also provides a section for control systems security recommended practices on the ICS webpage on cisa.gov/ics. Several recommended practices are available for reading and download, including Improving Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity with Defense-in-Depth Strategies.
Additional mitigation guidance and recommended practices are publicly available on the ICS webpage on cisa.gov/ics in the Technical Information Paper, ICS-TIP-12-146-01BβTargeted Cyber Intrusion Detection and Mitigation Strategies.
Organizations observing any suspected malicious activity should follow their established internal procedures and report their findings to CISA for tracking and correlation against other incidents.
CISA also recommends users take the following measures to protect themselves from social engineering attacks:
No known public exploits specifically target these vulnerabilities
