Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow an attacker to gain access to electronic protected health information (ePHI) or other sensitive information.
The following BD Pyxis products, an automated medication dispensing system, are affected:
The affected product is vulnerable due to the use of hard-coded credentials, which may allow threat actors to gain access to the underlying file system and exploit application files for information that could be used to decrypt application credentials or gain access to electronic protected health information (ePHI) or other sensitive information. Credentials are BD managed and are not visible to or used by customers to access or use BD Pyxis devices.
CVE-2022-22766 has been assigned to this vulnerability. A CVSS v3 base score of 7.0 has been calculated; the CVSS vector string is (AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H).
BD voluntarily reported this vulnerability to CISA.
BD is in the process of strengthening credential management capabilities in BD Pyxis devices.
Additionally, BD recommends the following compensating controls for users of BD Pyxis products that utilize the hard-coded credentials:
For more information on this issue, please see the associated BD product security bulletin on the BD website.

CISA reminds organizations to perform proper impact analysis and risk assessment prior to deploying defensive measures.
CISA also provides a section for control systems security recommended practices on the ICS webpage on cisa.gov. Several recommended practices are available for reading and download, including Improving Industrial Control Systems Cybersecurity with Defense-in-Depth Strategies.
Additional mitigation guidance and recommended practices are publicly available on the ICS webpage on cisa.gov in the Technical Information Paper, ICS-TIP-12-146-01B–Targeted Cyber Intrusion Detection and Mitigation Strategies.
Organizations observing any suspected malicious activity should follow their established internal procedures and report their findings to CISA for tracking and correlation against other incidents.
No known public exploits specifically target this vulnerability. This vulnerability is not exploitable remotely. This vulnerability has a high attack complexity.
